Ralph Nicholas came to the University of Chicago as a graduate student in Anthropology in 1957 because he had heard that it would soon have a program in South Asian Studies. He went to India for his first research, in West Bengal, in 1960 and has returned numerous times. His research has dealt with ecology, village politics, and in recent years, religious rituals. He served as President of the American Institute of Indian Studies from 2002 until 2010.
