Member Achievement: Mohit Manohar, Assistant Professor of South Asian Art

Mohit Manohar, COSAS member and Assistant Professor of South Asian Art, was recently awarded the Margaret B. Ševčenko Prize in Islamic Art and Culture from the Historians of Islamic Art Association (HIAA) for his insightful study, “The Case of the Buried Temple at Solapur: Construction Sacrifice, Saintly Samādhi, and the ‘Temple-Mosque’ Debate in India.”

In his research, Professor Manohar analyzes the ongoing “temple-mosque” debates in India using an impressive array of visual, material, and textual sources in several categories and languages. Manohar’s paper also makes compelling arguments about syncretism, re-use, and reception that are relevant well beyond the realms of art and architectural history and archaeology alike.

The Margaret B. Ševčenko Prize is awarded to the best unpublished essay written by a junior scholar (pre-dissertation graduate student to three years after the Ph.D. degree) on any aspect of Islamic visual culture. The winning essay will be considered for publication by the Muqarnas Editorial Board.

Please join us in congratulating Professor Manohar on his achievement!
