Twentieth Annual South Asia Graduate Student Conference: South Asian Stories and Storytelling

March 2nd and 3rd, 2023

Swift Hall

The theme for the SAGSC XX is Stories and Storytelling. Stories and their tellings are the bedrock of social life. Origin myths, national histories, religious texts, political manifestos, personal life histories — each of these shape understandings of the human experience and the flow of history. South Asia is a region rich with diverse cultures of storytelling. This year’s presentations range from Children’s Literature in Late Colonial Bengal to Narratives on the Telegraph Surveillance in British India, from a Cautionary Tale on Excessive Jealousy in a 17th-Century Persian Ramayana to Pious Young Mappila Women of Malabar. Join us for a lively discussion around questions surrounding South Asian cultures of storytelling, oral traditions, film/literary/artistic works, and more.
