SAGSC XXI: South Asia Graduate Student Conference

Islam in South and Southeast Asia

Join us for our 21st Annual South Asia Graduate Student Conference! This year’s conference, ISLAM IN SOUTH & SOUTHEAST ASIA, welcomes keynote speaker Teren Sevea, who delivers his lecture, Karāmāt: The Prophet’s Eastern Heirs and Nodes of a Multi-Centered Islam. Professor Sevea is the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies at Harvard Divinity School.

This year, the Conference aims to facilitate a discussion of new ideas, dialogues, and approaches to the study of South and Southeast Asian Islam. Thus we hope to provide a venue for interventions into ongoing debates and discussions on Islam in South and Southeast Asia in its various manifestations such as Medieval, Islamicate, Persianate, Arabicate, Oceanic, Archipelagic, Minority, and the like.

Graduate speakers represent programs across the diaspora, including Princeton University, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Delhi. A dinner reception concludes the conference on Friday evening.

Proudly co-sponsored by the University of Chicago Committee on Southern Asian Studies (COSAS) and Center for the Study of Gender & Sexuality (CSGS). For inquiries and accessibility requests, please email southasia@uchicago.edu or message us here!
