Prahlad Singh Tipaniya is an internationally acclaimed folk singer from the village of Lunyakhedi, Madhya Pradesh. He is renowned for his singing and interpretation of Kabir and other Hindi poets associated with the nirgun bhakti region. Among Tipaniya’s many honors is the prestigious Padma Shri award, given by the government of India.
Kabir was a poet of the fifteenth century known for both his profound mystical insight and his sharp social commentary. His voice is often invoked as inspiring communal harmony and social equality.
Tipaniya and Kabir Singers will be introduced by Linda Hess, authors of Bodies of Song: Kabir Oral Traditions and Performative Worlds in North India (Oxford University Press, 2015), which takes readers through the world of Kabir, the world of Tipaniya, and the world of oral poetry and song in India.
