Inaugural Papiya Ghosh Memorial Lecture: “Gujarat to Delhi: Modi’s Strategies to Win and Retain Power”

Inaugural Papiya Ghosh Memorial Lecture: “Gujarat to Delhi: Modi’s Strategies to Win and Retain Power,” Christophe Jaffrelot, Avantha Chair and Professor, Indian Politics and Sociology, King’s India Institute (5pm, Location TBA)

Since his Gujarat years, Narendra Modi relies on the same strategies for conquering and retaining power: communal polarisation, national-populist communication techniques, the capture of institutions, and the creation of oligarchs and vigilantism. These strategies have resulted in the unprecedented forms of authoritarianism, including a deeper state, and the making of a more inegalitarian socio-economic scene.
