Romeena Kureishy

Assistant Instructional Professor of Urdu in South Asian Languages and Civilizations

Romeena Kureishy is the Assistant Instructional Professor of Urdu in South Asian Languages and Civilizations.

She has an MA in Urdu Language and Literature, and is pursuing an MPhil in Urdu from Karachi University. Her research interests are in Urdu and 21st century pedagogy, use of AI in the Urdu classroom, shared history of Hindi-Urdu, Arooz (Prosody), and Urdu proficiency standards.

Before joining the University of Chicago, she taught Urdu at the University of Pennsylvania and Kean University and was a pedagogy instructor at NYU. She trains Urdu teachers in the United States and in Pakistan at Aga Khan University’s Institute for Educational Development as an Honorary Research Associate.

Her non-academic interests include South Asian music, films, and organizing cultural and literary events for the public.
